When should you clean your chimney? Well, that varies. Depending on how often you use your chimney, you'll need chimney sweep services more or less than other homeowners. However, there are ways to tell that your chimney needs cleaning. After a while, a substance called creosote builds up in the flue of your chimney. This happens when wood isn't burned all the way, or when you have a smoky fire giving off a lot of tar vapors. The more these vapors stick to the flue of the chimney, the more soot and tar you'll acquire.
To check for creosote, first put on goggles and a mask. Check if there is air down flow - if so, open a door or window. Then, take a flashlight, point it into the chimney, and use the fire poker to touch the smoke chamber. If the layer is thin, there's no need to call us for a chimney sweep. However, if the creosote layer is about 1/8 in. thick, give us a ring. Even though you can remove creosote yourself, it's better to hire a professional for safety reasons.
